Birthday Recap
Just a few days after the wedding, after Joe’s birthday, after Penelope’s birthday, came my birthday. I won’t lie, I kept waiting for a little surprise or gift to pop up as I got ready that morning. But … nothing much happened. But then, during the day, I got a message from Joe saying that he had a surprise for me that evening. Oh?
When Joe got home, he confessed that there wasn’t a card for me, but …
Joe: I’m about to do something I’ve never done before in our relationship and will probably never do again.
Me: You’re taking me out to sushi.
Joe: I’m taking you out to sushi.
Now, if you know Joe, you know that sushi is not something he would eat without being forced. And even then, he’ll very vocally let you know how much he hates it, re: pork chops. So I requested that in addition to a sushi meal, there be no complaining during or after. He graciously agreed.
We make it to the restaurant (but only barely b/c we could hardly see the road thanks to a combo of a dirty windshield and bright sun) and Joe makes the … brave … decision to get the “real deal.” No California rolls for Joe. No sir. He ordered “Sushi No. 1″ aka – hunks of rice with a slab of dead, raw fish on top. Yum …. ? He was a trooper and tried a bit of each … except the weird brownish one.
